We design and manufacture all our own cabinets in our factories in Yorkshire and Cheshire. Both of our factories only serve one customer – Howdens – and so their working practices and scheduling exactly match the requirements of our depots. The result is an efficient system with no unnecessary waste.
In addition to our factories, we have built trusted and long-standing relationships with some of the world’s leading suppliers.
We make what it makes sense to make, and we buy what it makes sense to buy.
Our first-choice location for producing our ranges is within the UK, which is why we have invested over £220 million over four years in our own manufacturing sites in Howden, East Yorkshire, and Runcorn, Cheshire. It is at both locations that our cabinets, laminate worktops and breakfast bars and some of our cabinet doors are made.
Using our own production facilities also allows us to control costs as well as standards, and make the processes used as efficient as possible. In addition, we are able to stipulate working practices within Howden and Runcorn that keep our environmental impact to a minimum, such as ensuring kitchen and bathroom cabinets are made from sustainable FSC® and PEFC™ certified sources, converting 12k tonnes of sawdust into energy and using 100% recycled packaging. The Board recognises this is an ongoing area for development and continues to invest in improvements.
To maintain our position as the UK’s number one trade kitchen supplier, we work exhaustively to drive the innovation and design of our products. We attend trade fairs to anticipate upcoming trends, consult with forecast experts to understand what tomorrow’s kitchens may look like and utilise customer feedback gathered through depots. When originating products, research and testing takes place at our dedicated Product Development Centre, allowing us to have a faster turnaround between an initial idea and a design’s release.Recent developments include anti-fingerprint technology for our super matt range, a pocket door system for stud walls, and a new timber-framed shaker.
We are certified to operate the Forest Stewardship Council and the Programme for the Endorsement of the Forest Certification Chain of Custody certificates. This ensures that the items we purchase come from responsibly managed forests and are produced in an environmentally friendly way.
100% of the chipboard used to manufacture our 4.4 million kitchen cabinets comes from sustainably managed forests in the UK.
